Janko Blaho (born 15th Sept. 1901 in Skalica - died 24th April 1981 in Bratislava) was the first professional opera singer. He started as the debutante in the Slovak National Theatre in Bratislava on 23rt March 1924. He took part from theatre audience in his last role on the stage at the State Theatre in Košice on 28th April 1965. Janko Blaho was a famous soloist of the opera stage of the Slovak National Theatre in Bratislava from 1926 through 1965. During his professional carrier he has played more than 150 opera characters and the roles of the classical operetta. He acquired reputation as the recognized performer of the Smetana and Mozarts operas, and he became the opera audience's favorite in the exposed singing parts of the Italian and French romantic opera. He was a protagonist of the first premieres of Slovak opera performances (from the music compositors Bella, Figuš-Bystrý, Rosinský, Holoubek, Suchoň and Cikker) and a frequent guest of the classical music stages. He was also a pioneer of the Slovak radio music broadcasts, he acted as the singer on the published gramophone records with opera arias and with popular music songs, collector, performer and first of all, an enthusiastic promoter of the folklore songs, mainly those stemming from his native Záhorie region. Janko Blaho was engaged as a pedagogue of the Music Arts College in Bratislava.
