Franciscan Church of Annunciation of the Virgin Mary in Bratislava represents an important sight not only on the Slovak territory but also within broader extention of Central European countries. The church was consecrated on the festival of Annunciation of the Virgin Mary on March 25, 1297 by participation of King Andrew III, archbishop of Esztergom-Lodomer, ordainer bishop Jakob and other personalities of church and social life as well as large number of believers. The presbytery of the church accomplished by polygonal-end with original rib-vaulting is one of the few preserved early-gothic sights in our country. The one naved two floored chapel of St. John Evangelist with crypt in the groundfloor comes from the 2. half of the 14.th century and is situated to the northern side of the church. The chapel is regarded as the peak of the gothic architecture development in Slovakia. Earthquake in the years 1580 and 1586 bodly destroied the church and the monastery, the original gothic arch of the church-aisle broke down. In the years 1613 - 1616 today's renaissance arch was erected. Since the begin of the 18.th century baroquesation of the exterior and interior of the complex is taking place. There is an interior of the chapel of St. John, neogothic pinnacle and a roof-bolt of the crypt pictured on the stamp. FDC gives a detail of the gothic interior decoration and of the unique roof-bolt of presbytery. Cancellation includes the symbol of the franciscan order.
