The mouflon (Ovis musimon) is a large, short-fleeced game animal with a characteristically ovine body. It is not indigenous to Slovakia, but was introduced from Corsica. The first to begin rearing mouflon here - in 1868 - was Count Forgach, on his estate at Jelenec (formerly Gýmeš) in the Tribeč hills. This precedent was followed up repeatedly over time, with mouflon migrating to more distant localities and hunting grounds which offered favourable conditions. These include varied rocky terrain with warm sunny slopes and sparse growth of deciduous and mixed, rather than coniferous woods. The mouflon has a good tolerance of difficult climatic conditions if not combined with deep snow. It is estimated that there are currently about four thousand specimens in Slovakia, with around a thousand being hunted annually. The world mouflon population is around seventy thousand.
