Popradské pleso lake (or tarn) lies at an elevation of 1,500 metres and, at 6.88 hectares, is one of the largest on the Slovak side of the High Tatras. If its fauna, mostly the lower animals, is somewhat sparse due to the relatively cold water, the tarn makes up for this with its spectacular setting at a point where the valleys Zlomisková dolina and Mengusovská dolina meet, with the Ostrvy massif providing the backdrop. Initially there was a chalet at the tarn, before a hotel was built thirty years ago. Popradské pleso is a starting-point for walks to beauty spots such as Veľké Hincovo pleso (at 20.08 hectares the largest tarn on the Slovak side of the range), Rysy peak and the highest-situated chalet, below the Váha saddle. Located in a cedar-pine grove not far from the tarn is a symbolic cemetery for those who have perished on the mountains - the only one of its kind in the world.
